Living Miracles

by Beverly Hutchinson McNeff

After presenting a sermon at one of my favorite local churches, I was chatting in the social hall when a woman I had visited with many times before came up to me. She told me she was now residing in an assisted living home, and she continued…

“I did not like the idea of living there, but circumstances were such that there was no other choice. I was not happy. Then, one day, I decided if I was going to live in an assisted living home, I would start assisting the living. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I started helping others – assisting the living – and now I feel great!”

That was all it took for her – a simple shift in perception…and, isn’t that a miracle? As the Course reminds us,

“What the world is, is but a fact. You cannot choose what this should be. But you can choose how you would see it. Indeed, you must choose this.” (M-11.1:9)

So it all comes down to you. The power of decision is your own. What kind of world do you want to experience? One where you feel overwhelmed and powerless or one where you “walk with God in perfect holiness?”

Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I started helping others – assisting the living – and now I feel great!”

It takes practice; that’s why the Course’s workbook lesson 156, “I walk with God in perfect holiness,” counsels us to repeat this lesson continuously. It says…

“Who walks with me?” This question should be asked a thousand times a day, till certainty has ended doubting and established peace. Today let doubting cease. God speaks for you in answering your question with these words:

I walk with God in perfect holiness. I light the world, I light my mind and all the minds which God created one with me.

It’s time we start using this to answer the myriad questions the world confronts us with. We do walk with a mighty companion and we can light the world – that’s our job today and every day.

The old saying, “practice makes perfect” is right on. If we are to know the perfect truth of who we are, a miracle is needed. We don’t need to change partners, jobs, or locations – you can, but you don’t need to in order to find peace and fulfillment.

Miracles are happening 24/7, but it is up to us whether we tap into that awareness. Maybe it is time we start bringing miracles to life!
