One of the most asked questions by students of A Course is Miracles has to be, “How can I hear God’s Voice?” This workbook lesson gives us a rather different answer than the traditional “how to” answer, for it says you already are listening to God’s Voice! It tells us that there is a part of our mind which “is in constant communication with God, whether you are aware of it or not,” but there is another “part of our mind that functions in the world and obeys the world’s laws. It is this part that is constantly distracted, disorganized and highly uncertain.” So the question is not “How can I hear God’s Voice?” as much as “Do I want to hear God’s Voice?”
If you want to hear God’s Voice, this lesson says that your reward will be a mind that is “calm, always at rest and wholly certain.” It also says that this part of your mind “is really the only part there is. The other part is a wild illusion, frantic and distraught, but wholly without reality of any kind.”
But to feel the calm and peace of mind this lesson promises means that we must want it above the insanity of our lives and this world. We must be willing to “sacrifice” our pains, fears and worries — not to deny them, but to honestly look at them with the help of our Internal Teacher and decide if holding on to them is worth the cost of our peace and God’s Voice and direction in our lives. Be willing to “go past all the raucous shrieks and sick imaginings that cover your real thoughts and obscure your eternal link with God. Sink deep into the peace that waits for you beyond the frantic, riotous thoughts and sights and sounds of this insane world. You do not live here. We are trying to reach your real home… We are trying to reach God.”
This lesson assures us that it is quite possible to listen to God’s Voice all through the day, for there is really no choice between truth and illusion except in confused minds. Let us be willing to turn to God today whenever we can. Let us make it the highest priority in our day to listen to His Voice.
“God’s Voice speaks to me all through the day.”
Let us not betray our birthright for the momentary fantasies of this world, when God’s Voice is calling to us “lovingly, reminding you that your Creator has not forgotten His Son. He wants you to hear His Voice. He gave it to you to be heard.” “God’s Voice speaks to me all through the day.” Let us repeat this idea realizing that we are inviting God’s Voice to speak to us and the truth to be known in our lives. Amen.
