When our ballots to vote in this year’s election arrived in the mail, our son Jeff asked if we could all vote together. We were not going into the polls because they had not opened yet. But, he wanted us to sit down at the kitchen table and vote together as a family. This is not the first election Jeff has voted in; he cast his first vote at the age of eighteen in 2016. But this year was important to him, as it was for my husband Paul and me. So, we sat together, talked about the propositions and candidates, and we made our selections. We then signed and sealed our ballots and drove to our drop box to “vote” together.
A Course in Miracles tells us this world is an illusion, and those who come here want to focus on illusions. This is a world of separation, attack, pain, and suffering, and this certainly seems to be the “truth” according to how we now see ourselves and our basic nature. But, this is not our fate. Yes, voting is part of the illusion, but so is eating and so is breathing and so is the digital device you are using to read this post.
Although everything in this physical world is an illusion, that does not mean we are forever doomed to this illusion. We can and will awaken, because this is an illusion. We have never left our home in God to wander in this world alone and lost; born but to suffer and die. We are the “holy Children of God Himself. We cannot suffer, cannot be in pain; We cannot suffer loss, nor fail to do all that salvation asks.” (W-191 paraphrased) The Course tells us this declaration and expression of life will undo the hell we think is so real. Why? Because it gives us back the power of choice we have thrown away in favor of the diminishing illusions of the ego’s world.
If we feel lost in a world of suffering, we are lost. But, when we arise in glory each day, and even every moment, the ego’s world of fear and separation will not be able to extinguish our light. Our love, coupled with the power of truth, can overcome any obstacle and show us the miracle that stands “in shining silence next to every dream of pain and suffering, of sin and guilt.”
When our son reached out to us in joining together to vote, love trumped fear. It wasn’t just that he wanted to vote, but that he wanted to vote together. The ego wins in isolating thoughts, but Spirit wins when one mind knows it is stronger together than alone.
In the Course, we read…
“The body was not made by love. Yet love does not condemn it and can use it lovingly, respecting what the Son of God has made and using it to save him from illusions.” (T-18.VI.4)
This can be startling, but it is the truth. Love had nothing to do with the entire world of form as we now see it. But that is not the end of the story. Love can use anything our illusory thinking has made to save us from our illusions, and thereby help us awaken. Love can even use voting.
Our country is seeing long lines for voting, but the lengthy wait is not discouraging people. They put on their masks, social distance, and find joy in the act of joining together to cast their vote. Just as my family found joy in voting together at the kitchen table, you can find joy and purpose by realizing that when you unite in healing you call upon the power of love to transcend the world of illusions.
The Course tells us…
“The ego always seeks to divide and separate. The Holy Spirit always seeks to unify and heal.” (T-7.IV.5)
It is time we use every tool in the ego’s arsenal of separation and attack for our healing and unity. When we do this, the ego will begin to melt away just as the wicked witch in The Wizard of Oz was dissolved by something as simple as water. The misplaced belief in the strength of division and separation will never be able to triumph over our One Mind centered on our healing unity. As the Course goes on to say…
Healing is the way to undo the belief in differences, being the only way of perceiving the Sonship as one. This perception is therefore in accord with the laws of God, even in a state of mind that is out of accord with His. The strength of right perception is so great that it brings the mind into accord with His, because it serves His Voice, which is in all of you.” (T-7.IV.5)
The way to our awakening in a world of illusions is through each other. It is time we stop listening to the shrieks of fear and separation that are the battle call of the ego. Let us unite with the mighty Mind of God that can take our little willingness for healing, in the midst of all our chaos, and transform it into the miracles we are entitled to.
